Legendary Pakistan pacer Waqar Younis has rubbished speculations about coaching the national side.
Earlier, rumours about Younis being approached for the role of bowling coach of Pakistan team were rife on social media.
However, taking to Twitter, Younis stated that he has not been approached for the role and has “no intentions of taking that job”.
The former speedster’s last stint with the Pakistan team ended in 2021 when he stepped down as bowling coach. He was appointed in September 2019 and still had a year each left in his contract.
Younis was the Pakistan head coach twice before between 2010 and 2011, and 2014 and 2016. He has also been in charge of franchise clubs across the globe, including at Bangladesh Premier League's Sylhet Sixers and Pakistan Super League's Islamabad United.
Earlier, the chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee, Najam Sethi, had hinted that foreign coaches could be hired for the national team in the future.
The Pakistan men’s cricket team’s coaching staff is led by former off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, meanwhile Mohammad Yousuf is the batting coach.
“Our local superstars and former players will be employed, we will look after them and find them jobs but they won't be coaching the team,” Sethi told media in Lahore last month.
“When I was in power, we had Mickey Arthur and results were evident. We were world number one in both ODI and Test cricket and we won the Champions Trophy as well.”
Sethi also revealed the reason behind hiring foreign coaches for the Pakistan team.
“We will hire a foreign coach for the national team. Local coaches are not professional coaches. Superstars in Pakistan can't be coaching players, a foreign coach won't do nepotism and favouritism but our local coaches do that because it's in our culture,” he said.
